4th Graders Become More Socially Aware...

This week fourth graders began wrapping up their study of the novel "The Family Under the Bridge" by Natalie Carson Savage. In an effort to gain a better understanding of the plight of the characters, students participated in a "Homelessness Simulation." Working in "families," they attempted to locate places in which they might seek shelter if they were homeless, taking into consideration such factors as weather, available food supply, security, etc. Afterwards, students attempted to survive a month on a limited budget, through the virtual reality game, "SPENT."

LS Classes Join Together to Celebrate the 29th Annual International Day of Peace!

This week, on Wednesday, September 21st, many of the LS classes helped celebrate the 29th annual International Day of Peace. Created by the United Nations in 1981, Peace Day is intended to mark our personal and planetary progress towards peace.

This Week in Fourth Grade...

This week in Fourth Grade, students entered the world of cartography. After learning about cardinal and intermediate directions, and how to read latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates on a global grid, students practiced locating various places in the United States. Then, inspired by a student observation, we turned an exercise ball into a hands-on model of the latitude and longitude lines to further illustrate the concept!

Students also began their first novel study of the year, using "The Family Under the Bridge", by Natalie Savage Carlson.

Fourth Graders are off to a great start!

We here in fourth grade are so excited to begin a new school year with a wonderful group students, including a few new additions to the Allen family! In the first week, in addition to becoming familiar with the policies, procedures, and expectations for fourth grade, students kicked off their Language Arts curriculum by writing Bio Poems as a way of introducing themselves to their classmates (and their teacher!). After drafting, revising, and editing their poems, students created a finished piece and put them on display in the hallway outside of the classroom.

Welcome to the start of another great school year!

Tomorrow is the beginning of what is bound to be another fantastic school year at Allen Academy, and we here in fourth grade are very excited! After last week's wonderful turn-out for the Allen family cook-out and Meet the Teacher night, it is clear that students, parents, and teachers alike are all approaching the new year with energy and enthusiasm. We hope to soon being able to feature student writing here on our blog, but in the meantime, be on the lookout for our updates every week from the exciting world of 4th grade!

Good day to whoever is reading this.  We had a fun-filled day in the 4th grade today!  The day started in Mrs. Buckland’s science/math class.  We had loads of fun there.  We used the internet to forecast the weather and wrote it down in our science journals.  Samuel and Ashley presented the forecast to the class.  They were graded on how well they did.  I can’t wait to get up there eventually.

Today was Monday. We started the day off with a little math. First, we recorded today's and tomorrow's weather. Then, we worked on our pretest. Our pretest was easy because we already knew the answers. Math was really fun.
After math we did art. Ms.D. was absent,so Mrs.Spon filled in for her. First, we did unfinished art. Then we could free draw. After art we took home our portfolios. We're pumped up and excited!
Now we have vocab. I was absent last Wednesday, so I had make-up work to do. We also did the work where you fill in your vocab. words in a paragraph.

Friday, October 15, 2010 - Food Drive Kick-off!

On Monday, October 18th, the Allen Academy fourth graders will kick-off their two week long food drive, benefitting the Brazos Valley Food Bank. We are so excited to be able to help out our community, while learning more about how the BVFB operates and extends assistance to the residents of Brazos Valley.

Special thanks go to Junghee Hahm for creating our poster to advertise the food drive around the Allen Academy campus!
