LS Classes Join Together to Celebrate the 29th Annual International Day of Peace!

This week, on Wednesday, September 21st, many of the LS classes helped celebrate the 29th annual International Day of Peace. Created by the United Nations in 1981, Peace Day is intended to mark our personal and planetary progress towards peace.

This year, Kindergarten, First Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth grade students worked together to recognize this International Day of Peace. Inspired by one of the previous winners of the NAPF (Nuclear Age Peace Foundation) Barbara Mandigo Kelly Peace Poetry Award, the LS students, the visiting A&M Methods students, and their respective homeroom teachers took the time to discuss what this day, and the concept of "peace" means to each of us. Students also discussed how we can help create a more peaceful world, through both our independent choices and our collective actions.

After the discussions, students took the time to write a word or phrase, or draw a picture, that best represented their idea of peace onto a paper feather. These feathers were then brought down to the hallway outside of the Fourth Grade classrooms to help fill in a Dove of Peace. The finished dove became a shape poem entitled, "Ninety-three Kinds of Peace".

The best part of it all was that throughout the day, students were overheard discussing peace, and reminding one another of the importance of treating others with respect and kindness. It was a wonderful opportunity to reinforce our LS Core Values, and encourage our students to think about the ways in which the values we exhibit can help shape the world around us.
