Media Madness - How Does a Computer Work?

Kindergarten through fifth grade investigated the ins and outs of computers this week. They learned that computers have a "brain" or CPU to tell the computer how to function. And did you know they also have a "Mother" or motherboard that helps hold everything together and keep things running smoothly? Along with the proper care of the computers, students discussed input and output devices, memory, and differences between a "browser" and a "search engine".

Fourth and Fifth Grade fingers are flying as they focus on their keyboarding skills. How many WPM can you type? How accurate are your skills? Students are anxious to see how their skills improve over the course of the year. They will be putting their skills to use as they work on Word Processing skills such as letter writing, creating brochures, and other media presentation projects.

Fourth and fifth grade students are continuing to create Core Value Posters using Microsoft Publisher. As they work in their groups, students have collaborated on each digital image pose, as well as using the cameras to capture the perfect representation of each core value.

Another busy week in Lower School Media! Kinder students began learning about the “home row keys” and some are already catching on to the skill. First graders extended their study of Fire Safety by using Microsoft Paint to create “evacuation plans” using a floor plan template. Second and Third grade are expanding their word processing skills by creating acrostic poems using Word Art. Finally the Fourth and Fifth graders are taking on a leadership role of reinforcing our Core Values with the Lower School students.

Does this Compute? Lower School students began working with their computers this week after completing their internet safety unit. Students logged onto their computers using their new logins and passwords. Younger students learned on to “boot” and shut down their computers properly as well as learning the logging in process. In addition, 3rd-5th graders also discussed the importance of creating secure passwords and began refreshing their keyboarding skills by reviewing the home row keys.

Media Madness

During this week's Media classes, students discussed the use of abbreviation to help remember and share information. Using the NetSmartz abbreviation UYN for Use Your NetSmartz, students created posters to remind them to be safe when online. So, UYN and remember don't give out personal information such as you name, address, or phone number on the internet!
