Monarch Migration

Have you noticed the number of Monarch butterflies flying around lately? Miss Sanders' 2nd graders know that with the cooler weather on its way down from the north, the Monarchs are migrating south to find warmer temperatures. Some of the butterflies are traveling through Bryan/College Station on their way to Mexico. There are literally millions of Monarchs that spend our cold weather months at a butterfly sanctuary in Mexico. We are members of Journey South, which is a symbolic migration project.

Class Representative Election

After studying campaign posters, listening to amazing speeches and an unbelievably close secret vote, we now have our two Student Council Class Representatives! All of the candidates understood that being a representative meant following each of our Core Values. Any one of the seven candidates would have been a good choice, but after a close race, we elected two new representatives! Congratulations to all of our 2nd grade candidates!!

Autobiography Publishing Party

Our Autobiography Publishing Party put the final touch on our Biography Unit in reading.

Biography Projects

Biography Projects are on display! I was so amazed at the work I saw this week! We "met" many interesting people...Neil Armstrong, Hellen Keller, Anne Frank, William Shakespeare, Elvis Presley and many more. The presentations were great and they practiced using appropriate voice and making eye contact with the audience as they presented their projects. The second grade wall looks amazing!

It's Allen Fund Time Again!!

It's Allen Fund time again! To kick off this important event, we all made bright yellow paper airplanes and tested out flight patterns before the official take off.

Have You Filled a Bucket Today?

As another way to incorporate the Core Values into our classroom, I read a book to the class called "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" It explains that everyone has an invisible bucket that holds their good feelings. When someone does or says something nice, it fills your bucket. When someone hurts you, they are called a bucket dipper and that takes away from both buckets.

Biographies and Box Tops

During the first week of school, all of the kids completed an "All About Me" poster. Today, we used that poster as a resource for our first major writing assignment.

Around the World

What's a better way to practice our math facts than going Around the World! To get our brains in "math mode" each day, we play a quick game with our facts. Two students compete to answer a problem first. The first to answer correctly moves to the next person and then they compete. The goal is to move around the room by answering math facts quickly. So far, it is one of their favorite games that we play! I've told them to make it their personal goal to move one chair past where they moved yesterday. Today, there were four math smarties who moved farther!! Watch out multiplication...we're getting ready for you!!

Lonely socks...

You know how you always end up with one lonely sock after you do the laundry? I have a suggestion for what you could do with them...send them to school with your kids, so that we can use them as erasers for our slates! I'm looking to collect 20 socks, so next time you find yourself folding laundry and you come across that lonely sock, put it to good use!! Thank you in advance!

Read All About Me!!

We enjoyed listening to half of our friends tell what makes them special. The other half will present tomorrow. It was very interesting to hear about what our favorite foods, books and sports were. We saw pictures of our friends with snakes, hats and flamingos and learned about their family members.
