Monarch Migration

Have you noticed the number of Monarch butterflies flying around lately? Miss Sanders' 2nd graders know that with the cooler weather on its way down from the north, the Monarchs are migrating south to find warmer temperatures. Some of the butterflies are traveling through Bryan/College Station on their way to Mexico. There are literally millions of Monarchs that spend our cold weather months at a butterfly sanctuary in Mexico. We are members of Journey South, which is a symbolic migration project. As the butterflies migrate south, our class made a symbolic butterfly to "migrate" to Mexico and spend the winter with a school near the sanctuary. Those students will take care of thousands of of "butterflies" from Canada, USA and Mexico and then randomly send them back to the schools in the Spring when the Monarchs begin their journey back north. See how many Monarchs you can count over the next few weeks!
