Biome Pie Chart

Students wanted to know which type of biome our Lower School students would want to visit, if they had the chance to take a special vacation.  Students conducted a survey in K-5th grade and recorded the results.  Upon gathering the data, students then created a table where they converted the tallies to percentages.  Our fourth graders agreed that they thought we could best represent this data by creating a pie chart which would analyze categories (biomes) and groups (grade levels).  Using protractors, students then determined the degree in which each perc

This week in Science!

This week in science, we began our landforms investigations.  Students set up stream tables with "earth material" (a mixture of diatomaceous earth and sand) and a water source.  They ran a liter of water through the system and observed and recorded the processes of erosion and deposition.  They learned some of the vocabulary used to describe landforms that result from these processes.  The erosion observed in the stream table is related to the formation of the Grand Canyon.  In addition to our stream tables, we took a short field trip around the Allen Academy ground

Fun in Fourth Grade!

Fourth graders are learning place value up to the millions period!  We are learning that you can use place value and period names to read and write in different forms.  We are learning to read and write in standard form, word form, and expanded form.  If you pass by our classroom you will pick up on our excitement in math as we play “The Price Is Right” to reinforce our skills!!

What's happening in fourth grade this week?

Fourth grade students are learning to use inverse relationship between multiplication and division to solve problems.  Through our classroom "busy bee" activities, students stay busy as a bee while working the problem of the day, spiral review, and enrichment activities.  Students record their answers in their math journals during each activity.  Don't be surprised if you hear a buzzing sound when you walk by our fourth grade classrooms!

Students enjoyed their behind the scenes field trip to KBTX News Room last week.   We had the opportunity to see the many jobs that KBTX employs while learning more about what it takes to run a news room.  Our favorite part of this field trip included meeting our local meteorologist, Shel Whinkley and getting to personally experience the “gre

Graph the Weather!

After recording and observing the weather for a few weeks, students created line and bar graphs using their data.  Students used the daily high, low, and current temperatures to create graphs displaying our local weather.  Creative juices were flowing as some students made a “key” to their bar graphs which display sunny, cloudy, or isolated thunderstorms with the corresponding dates!

Fourth grade would like to thank everyone for their contributions to the recent “Hunger is Scary” Food Drive!  All contributions will go to the Brazos Valley Food Bank.  Student enjoyed retrieving boxes from around the school and sorting the products before submitting them to the food drive.

This is the story of my day in fourth grade today. First, when we got to school we went to Mrs. St. Clair’s room. We read our own books quietly. Then we did work for our fourth grade community service project. We are having a food drive so we put out boxes all around the campus for people to put food in so we can donate it to the food drive. Then, back to Mrs. St. Clair’s we went.

Then we went to Mrs. Buckland’s class, our home sweet home-room. We studied for our math test tomorrow. Then Mrs. Buckland said, “Line up!
